More Nutrition? Buy Organic Is the cost of organic worth it over the common brand? Choosing organic over conventional produce was once a thorny decision that many grocery shoppers are now making. The average organic product is slightly costlier, but for the positive health factors you’ll reap, the decision to go organic is almost a no-brainer. Organic Over Conventional Produce: 1.Fewer Pesticides Pesticides can be absorbed into food. 2.Health Produce has 40% more nutrients. 52% higher level of Vitamin C 58% more anti-oxidants to lower heart disease A 2002 Newcastle study showed that organically grown produce had higher numbers of Vitamin C, Zinc and Iron. They’re important for the growth of healthy bones, skin, and cholesterol levels. for this one reason many feel the cost of organic is worth it but there’s more. Another study in 2003 showed naturally grown produce had 58% more “polyphenols.” These elements protect your body from harmful attacks such as heart disease. Is The Cost Of Organic Worth It? Definitely. For your health especially, it is well worth it. You will get more value and benefits from a better grown product. Alyson Mitchell, PH.D notes that organic techniques creates healthier produce and the cost of organic isn’t always more when you consider better quality. The difference in such excellence starts at the bottom, in soil fertility. The Organic Method: Composted soil that are chemical free Nitrogen in composted soil release slower Plants grow at a normal rate Nutrient is in balance The bottom line: Eat a balance diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. When possible, it is best to go organic. Most conventional produce in supermarkets are high in chemicals that puts your health at risk. When you opt for the organic variety, you are getting more goodness with less of the contaminations. Readers, let us know what YOU think about purchasing organic. Have you been able to taste the difference and what is the absolute organic product that is a must-grab at the store?

Soft Drinks Are Big Health Risks Soft drinks or soda pops, whatever you’d like to call them, one thing for sure is that it is a widely popular beverage. Young and old alike enjoy them year round and millions of dollars are poured into making these beverages to meet its high demand worldwide. The drawbacks to these delicious thirst-quenchers are of course the health risks. More importantly, how incredibly unhealthy it is for the human body. Soda pops are unusually high in sugar. Many other additives that are also in soft drinks, such as high fructose corn syrup, have also been related to an increased chance of heart disease and diabetes. All That Sugar Is Killing You! It’s not just about sugar it’s about the amount of it that’s found in these types of drinks. The infographic we share here shows how much and just some of the health risks you take every time you give your child one of these or drink one yourself. Imagine what it does to your teeth or heart. Consider how much weight you gain just because of drinking soda pop. What are our better choices? Water is the best choice. If you don’t like the taste then try RO or reverse osmosis water, it has no taste or flavor. Be sure to avoid flavored water they have sugar or a sweetener too. Next, pure fresh fruit juice is fine if you don’t consume too much. One of the best ways to enjoy water is to drink RO water freshened with slices of lemons and limes to give it that citrus rush. Add a mint leaf to spice it up. You don’t have to fall victim to illness and water is healthy and life saving. How Soft Drinks Impact Your Health infographic ; ; Technorati Tags: food, good water, health, healthy diet, heart disease, how much water, infographic, Obesity, soda, soft drinks, visual.ly
Author information

Debra Arko

The post How Soft Drinks Impact Your Health [Infographic] appeared first on Accent On Health.

Here’s the claim: People think that buying organic foods are healthier for you than the generic varieties. Are there any truths that organic foods are better for you? Everwell Editor-in-Chief Robert Davis Ph.D. seeks the answers to the supposed claim. True Facts About Organic Food: Fruits and Vegetables are labeled organic if they are grown without conventional pesticide or petroleum based fertilizers. Organic foods contain fewer chemical residues. Meat and Dairy products are labeled organic if the animals were not given growth hormones or antibiotics. Organic packaged food can legally contain inorganic or artificial ingredients. Is there Proof Organic Food Is Better? As Robert Davis puts it himself, “In the end, it comes down to weighing the Pros and Cons for yourself” Whatever your feelings are on this claim, it is important that you eat a balance diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. A couple of organic items a day may keep the health risks at bay. YOU make the decision on your health. What do you think about this claim?

14 Foods You Should Be Buying Organic Ever go to the grocery store and become lost by the numerous offerings of “organic” and “standard” foods? If you become uncertain on what to purchase for you and your family, consider this. The Environment Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides came up with 12 items you should keep to buying organic only. Dirty Dozen Foods Always Buy Organic Most people buy organic on the fear of eating poorly grown food that harms the body. To learn more on the necessity of it in your diet, refer to our piece on Organic Food here. The next time you shop, think about these “dirty dozens” and only buy if it’s organic. There are actually 14 you have to remember. In 2012, two more snuck onto the list. While they don’t contain as much germs as the first 12 items, they do still pose a risk for the considerable amount of pesticides in them. Here are the 14 things to buy organic, starting with dirtiest. Apples Celery Sweet Bell Peppers Peaches Strawberries Imported Nectarines Grapes Spinach Lettuce Cucumbers Locally grown (U.S) Blueberries Potatoes Green Bean Kale/Greens The last two items on the list are in the EWG’s Plus category. They don’t meet the normal criteria, but they do still have high traces of the bad things that are present in all the other food.

The latest news about Cholesterol: Think The Secret To Good Health Is Eliminating Cholesterol From Your Diet? Think Again. The myth behind the hazard of cholesterol is wrong. According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra and Dr. Jonny Bowdoin in their controversial book “The Great Cholesterol Myth” the concept behind cholesterol causing heart disease is a lie. They even go so far as to say the higher your cholesterol, the longer you will live! The Argument About Cholesterol Being Harmful For You. “Blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming the firemen for the fire,” says Dr. Jonny Bowdoin. In the video, they point out 2 misconceptions about cholesterol. In part 1, the doctors explore the first mistake. Dr. Stephen Sinatra and Dr. Jonny Bowdoin believe that cholesterol is not the root cause for heart disease. People need cholesterol. The higher your cholesterol, the more protected you are against illnesses like hemorrhagic strokes. The original research that spawned this widespread belief, Dr.Bowdoin points out, was done in the 1960’s and was extremely faulty. In modern research today, it would not have been published. It is a debate that has stirred up plenty of controversy in the health community. To dispel the idea of cholesterol being harmful, the doctor duo went on to The Dr. Oz show to explore their “radical new plan for keeping your heart healthy.” Technorati Tags: cholesterol, Dr.Oz, Dr.Stephen Sinatra, health community, heart disease, misconceptions about cholesterol, stroke symptoms, Video
Author information

Debra Arko Novotny

CEO at Accent On Health Wellness Centers

TwitterFacebookGoogle+LinkedIn

The post Is Everything You Know About Cholesterol Wrong?

A new study has hinted that certain cholesterol medications might be able to lower your risk against macular degeneration. It could also be effective enough to reduce the chance of getting the disease completely. Now the key is to use natural remedies that do the same thing for your eyes and heart without the horrible side effects of drugs. New Hope For People With The Macular Degeneration Gene Macular Degeneration is a blinding eye disease. It is the leading cause of vision loss amongst older Americans. This study suggests it could be avoided if you do two things. Keep your cholesterol in check and maintain a healthy immune system. In the journal Cell Metabolism, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found the correlation between macular degeneration and atherosclerosis [narrowing of your blood vessels] was a similar underlying effect. Both diseases make those afflicted unable to remove buildups of fat and cholesterol in their blood vessels. As we age, a buildup of cholesterol in our system is more likely to occur. In macular degeneration, our immune cells are not working. The key factor that was regulating our intake of cholesterol and fats, called macrophages, begins to fail with age. Can It Be So Easy To Stop Cholesterol And Macular Degeneration? Western pharmaceuticals are only the answer if you chose not to be proactive about your health. Changing your diet to include more fresh foods and adding exercise like walking can be a start. There’s more that you can do with herbs and nutrition. Remember these are drugs too. Taking over the counter vitamins and herbs is dangerous. See a licensed acupuncturist with herbal knowledge instead of trusting your health to a store clerk with a certificate provided by the health food company pushing the stuff on the store shelves. Wet Or Dry – What’s The Difference? There are two form of age-related macular degeneration. There is the “dry” form and the “wet” form. When you go in for your eye exam, the doctor might detect buildups of lipid (fat) beneath the eye. This is indicative of the “dry” form of age-related macular degeneration. When this happens, the deposits continue to grow and slowly over time, the central part of the eye is destroyed. This will cause you to go blind. You will slowly lose the vision that allowed you to read a book, or watch a movie. Then there is the “wet” form of this disease. “Most of the vision loss from ‘wet’ macular degeneration is the result of bleeding and scar-tissue formation related to abnormal vessel growth.” Dr. Apte explains the lead researcher in a recent study. Dr Apte and researchers at Washington University School Of Medicine have identified a protein that’s vital for the macrophages to do their job of removing harmful deposits in both the eye and the blood vessels. Your acupuncture herbalist will be able to talk more with you about which natural substances provide this same support to your body. This is a major step towards progress for so many affected with this terrible degenerative disease and proves the important role of this internal protector in longer, healthier living. Research link: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/258537.php Technorati Tags: Acupuncturist, atherosclerosis, cholesterol, cholesterol medications, herbalist, Macular Degeneration, natural medicine
Author information

Debra Arko Novotny

CEO at Accent On Health Wellness Centers

TwitterFacebookGoogle+LinkedIn

The post Can Lower Cholesterol Mean No Macular Degeneration For You? appeared first on Accent On Health.

TMD or TMJ Disorder Relief The first question to answer is, what is TMD or TMJ? If you have ever experienced TMD or TMJ you know the discomfort it causes. TMJ is when the joints of the jaw become inflamed or strained. When the jaw is experiencing discomfort of this nature it can lead to headaches. Easy exercise can help to relieve the pressure and erase the pain. The following exercise we are about to share are firsthand experience. The experience is not from a doctor, but from an individual that has experience in using them. When you try these exercises, use caution. If you feel uncomfortable or pain results while trying the exercises, stop and consult your physician. The exercises are meant to provide relief and not cause more discomfort. Relief with Jaw Exercises Find balance and alignment with your jaw. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and slowly open your mouth, separating your teeth. The goal is no lateral movement. If you experience lateral movement try again opening your mouth slower. Strengthen the joint with pressure and tension. Use the palm of your hand to push under your chin. Push upward and while your palm is pushing activate your lower jaw to push back. As you push one way move your jaw the other way. Another Strength move similar to the one above. Use your fingers to push down on your lower teeth. While pushing down move your teeth against the push, as if you would be biting down. Just be sure not to bite down. If you have an over bite, try taking your palm and push your chin backwards. This should create a stretch in your jaw. Stretch the neck muscles. Stretching the neck muscles helps to relieve pressure. An easy move is to act as though you are creating a second chin. Lean your chin down toward your neck, but don’t bend the head downward. Doing this for ten seconds elongates the neck, stretching it to loosen the muscle. TMD/TMJ disorder doesn’t have to be a permanent problem. Implementing a few easy techniques to strengthen and align the jaw and neck will go a long way. Relief from jaw pain and headaches will help you sleep better and create comfort. Don’t we all crave comfort and relief while we trudge this road of happy destiny? Try these exercises and share some of your own successful tips for relieving jaw pain.

Lower Back Pain can be an annoyance that persists throughout the day. It can bar you from engaging in daily activities, and restrict you from enjoying an active lifestyle. It’s even worse if you have Fibromyalgia since back problems persist daily. Stroga Lower Back Exercise Thanks to this YouTube, video from Helping Fibromyalgia Margo’s Stroga routine may bring you relief from your lower back pain! All you will need is a chair (or a bench) and enough space to lie flat on the floor. Make sure there is ample room to spread your arms. You won’t need a yoga mat for this, but the floor surface should be rather soft. A carpeted floor, if not a blanket or towel, will be sufficient. Alleviate the overwhelming pressure and pain with these simple stretches Margo shows viewers how to relieve these lower back pains with some simple maneuvers and poses. Her chief emphasis is on relaxation. When a stretch gets too intense, don’t do them. It’s okay to abandon uncomfortable poses if the tension is hindering your relief. The poses are simple. Intermediate to novice viewers will effectively reap the benefits of these exercises. Some of the poses to know are the Cobra Pose (a modified version is used in the video) Child Pose, Cat pose, and lastly the Cow pose. The most important thing to end the exercise with is to shake out any leftover tension. One specific stretch, the lower backstretch, is very intense and it is important that you remember to do a counter stretch to maximize the reprieve. The full video is below.

The Mayo Clinic recently did a great article on heart disease and medication-free ways to prevent heart disease. Can You Slow Heart Disease? Heart disease is considered one of the leading killers of people in American but it doesn’t have to be. While there are risks like family history, your age, and sex you have it in your power to put the odds in your favor! Five Ways To Beat The Beast First don’t smoke or use tobacco it has a significant impact on your health and your heart. It narrows blood vessels, and the risks increase with age. Social smoking is just as dangerous so avoid cigarettes or second hand smoke at all costs. Second do yourself a favor and exercise 30 minutes 4 to 6 days a week. It helps you with weight control, energy, and reduces strain on your heart like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. Ideally your exercise routine should be varied and moderately intense. Some great things include cleaning the house, gardening, walking the stairs or the dog all provides benefits. Third take a look at the DASH diet. It was designed for a happy, healthy heart. Its focus is hypertension though it a great move away from the unhealthy American fast food diet toward a longer life. Personally we suggest the Paleo diet which is higher in fat than DASH. If you need to lower your cholesterol you may want to modify both and create a middle ground eating program. Fourth we all naturally put on weight as we age this can lead to disease other than heart disease. Use the body mass calculation as a guide. Set your goal to be less than 25 and balance it with your waist measurement. Men stay below 40 inches and below 35 inches for women. Finally knowledge is power. Regular checkups and screening can guide you. If your medical doctor simply tells you’re just getting older try a different doctor. Be proactive in your wellness and remember age has nothing to do with it. Your health and your heart depend on the right choices and there are always options.

Sweet, sweet sugar. It can affect your health negatively because of the added calories that come along with it, that can lead to obesity. How Can Sugar Affect Your Health And Your Waistline? The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons (100 calories) of added sugar for women and 9 teaspoons (150 calories) for men. Unfortunately though, most Americans get more than 22 teaspoons — or 355 calories — a day. All sweeteners are a type of simple carbohydrate that your body uses for energy. Natural sugar can be found in fruits, vegetables and dairy foods. This type of sugar is high in fiber and can have many health benefits. Added sugar, on the other hand refers to sweeteners and syrups that are meant to enhance sweetness and make processed foods more appetizing. Foods with a lot of added fructose provide little nutritional value to your diet. Desserts, sodas, and energy and sports drinks are the top sources of added sugar for most Americans. According the Mayo Clinic article, Added Sugar: Don’t get sabotaged by Sweeteners, added sugar is a problem because it can lead to: Poor nutrition: If you fill up on foods loaded up with added sugar, like soda, you might skip nutritious foods, which means you could miss out on important nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Weight gain: Foods that contain a high amount of added sugar are also high in calorie count which can lead to weight gain. Increased triglycerides: Triglycerides are a type of fat in the bloodstream and fat tissue. Sugar can increase triglyceride levels, which may increase your risk of heart disease. Tooth decay: All types of fructose can lead to tooth decay because it allows bacteria to grow. The more often and longer you snack on foods and beverages with either natural sugar or added sugar, the more probable you are to get cavities. Start taking control of your sugar intake. It may be sweet going down, but it’s important to cut back on high calorie foods that don’t contain much nutritious benefits. Instead, load up on fruits and vegetables that will give you energy, provide fiber and satisfy your sweet tooth craving. And if it doesn’t satisfy your craving, go ahead and have a cookie, but make sure you’re only taking in around 100 calories per day of added sugar. Technorati Tags: fruits and vegetables, high calorie foods, reduce sugar intake, sugar and obesity, sugar calories, sugar health benefits, sugar intake, weight gain
Author information

Debra Arko Novotny

CEO at Accent On Health Wellness Centers

TwitterFacebookGoogle+LinkedIn

The post The Sweet Deal With Sugar: How It Affects Your Health appeared first on Accent On Health.

Think Yourself Thin Weight loss begins with determination, a positive mind and a strong desire to succeed. Affirmations are a positive thought process. Affirmations require people to think and act differently. Remember, you can’t just think your way thin, you have to think and act your way to a new mindset. When we change how we view our self- image it leads to new choices, which results in weight loss success. Disease and illness are everywhere, and each day new researchers say, “if only American’s would lose weight half the problems would go away.” People often think that if their mother or father have a pre-disposed ailment, then so will they. Fear, anger, past experiences and frustration control our thoughts. Taking action to re-write our personal history is a step in the right direction to changing the future. Losing weight can happen to anybody, anywhere, at any time in their life. The first step is to learn how to use affirmations to help you move forward. This article will begin your transformation in the right direction. Try using the affirmations we have provided for you, and if you still need more encouragement, give us a call. When I weighed more, I searched the weight loss success stories for a cure or secret way to change. The truth is everyone is different, and we all respond to different stimuli. Talk to your doctor before you start to make any drastic changes in your diet or exercise routine. Once you have a health clearance, you can begin to take action on cultivating that powerful mindset of wellness. The Secret to Weight Loss Success Is In the Mind Using positive affirmations will help you to begin to love your body and yourself. The best time to use affirmations is in the morning and just before you go to bed at night. Stand tall and confident in front of a mirror and say the following affirmations out loud: I love my body. My body is beautiful and healthy. I am strong and full of life. I am in control of my well-being. I release all negative emotions and beliefs that no longer support me. Weight loss success stories happen every day, and you can be one of them. Take the first steps in making a positive and healthy difference in your life today. Stay positive and learn to love yourself and watch as you develop a harmonious relationship with your mind, body and spirit. Image courtesy of:FreeDigitalPhotos.net Technorati Tags: affirmations, exercise routine, health, Losing weight, mindset, mindset of wellness, Weight Loss Success
Author information

Debra Arko Novotny

CEO at Accent On Health Wellness Centers

TwitterFacebookGoogle+LinkedIn

The post Using Affirmations to Achieve Weight Loss Success appeared first on Accent On Health.

Positive self-image can be a daily chore sometimes. Think about the images in magazines, on television ads; the perfect people with flawless skin, perfect bodies, laughing and enjoying what appears to be the best life. Every day we are faced with those images of perfection and what happiness should look and feel like. Defining our own true joy and loving ourselves just the way we are is essential. We can enjoy the life we live right now by loving the person we are from the inside out. What is Self Esteem? Self Esteem is the personal internal view each person holds. Confidence builds any persons self-esteem. Lack of confidence, depression, insecurity in yourself or the relationships you hold with others creates low self-esteem. When people let peers and the environment affect how they view themselves, and that energy is negative, it creates a poor internal view which leads directly to low self-esteem. How do you Build Self-Esteem? Living your best life in a healthy manner and with pure joy and bliss requires a positive and confident view of life which results in high self-esteem. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which involves reversing negative thought patterns, is an effective way to build self-esteem. The therapy involves changing individual thinking patterns that result in a different view of life and alternative internal view of self. Several ways to build and change thought patterns is to: Adjust your attitude about yourself and those you interact with Leave the past behind and live in the now Stop speaking negatively and replace all verbal exchanges with a positive Love and forgive yourself Move a Muscle and Change a Thought When we move and get into action we are less likely to sit and dwell in the mundane which is where low self-esteem exists. Getting into action strengthens self-esteem by boosting confidence and building self-value. This action must be combined with positive self-talk for a complete self-esteem boost. Be in charge of your own life Get active with something you are passionate about (running, cooking, photography) Carry yourself confidently, sit up straight and walk with your head up Everyone faces self-esteem issues at some point in their life, but it doesn’t have to control you. Low self-esteem can be a thing of the past for anyone at any age. Taking control and recognizing when and why you feel down is the first step. Recognizing our low self-esteem is paramount to reversing the effects and changing the negative to a positive. Building your confidence and self-value up when times are tough is crucial to maintain that joyous and positive life we all crave to achieve. One day at a time we can all master self-esteem no matter where we are in life. Thanks to Suite 101 for an excellent resource article Technorati Tags: Build Self-Esteem, confidence, mindset, Self Esteem
Author information

Debra Arko Novotny

CEO at Accent On Health Wellness Centers

TwitterFacebookGoogle+LinkedIn

The post Steps to Restoring Self-Esteem appeared first on Accent On Health.
